Jan Bajtlik – ViVaVostok

Wer ist eigentlich Jan Bajtlik? Und was mag/macht er für Kinderbücher? Drei Fragen an den Illustrator aus Polen.

– How did you start to illustrate books for children (and young people)?

When I was a child I met great Polish artist, illustrator Józef Wilkoń. He taught me drawing and painting. Thanks to him I started to be interested in illustration, book design for children and any kind of picture books. When I was in high school I started first attempts in illustration and book design. Thanks to this first experiences I knew that I want to continue education in this field
and I choose Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw.

Als Kind traf ich den großen polnischen Künstler und Illustrator Józef Wilkoń. Er brachte mir das Zeichnen und Malen bei. Dank ihm habe ich angefangen, mich für Illustration, Buchdesign für Kinder und alle Arten von Bilderbüchern zu interessieren. Als ich auf der weiterführenden Schule war, unternahm ich erste Versuche in Sachen Illustration und Buchdesign. Dank dieser ersten Erfahrungen wusste ich, dass ich mich in diesem Bereich weiter ausbilden lassen möchte und entschied mich für ein Studium an der Akademie der Künste in Warschau.

– Which of your books should everybody be familiar with (and why)?

By now my activity book about typography and creative scribbling for children (4+) “Alphadoodler” (in Polish “Typogryzmol”) is published in 6 languages. This book based on big research I made on many workshops with children. “Alphadoodler” is good base, source of creative work for children in schools, workshop events and just having fun where ever you are.
In 2014-2016 I did more than 130 workshops based on this book. Workshops took place in many cultural institutions and schools in Poland as well Tate Modern in London, MACBA in Barcelona, Festivaletteratura in Mantova, schools in Paris and series of workshops in Berlin organise with Kulturkind.

Im Augenblick ist mein Mitmach-Buch über Typographie und kreatives Kritzeln für Kinder ab 4 Jahren in sechs Sprachen veröffentlicht. Es heißt „Typokrakelei“ (auf Polnisch „Typogryzmol“). Dieses Buch ist entstanden auf Basis großer Recherchearbeiten, die ich in vielen Workshops mit Kindern gemacht habe. „Typokrakelei“ ist ein guter Ausgangspunkt und eine Quelle für kreatives Arbeiten mit Kindern in der Schule, für Workshops und einfach um Spaß zu haben – egal wo. Zwischen 2014 und 2016 habe ich über 130 Workshops gegeben, die alle das Buch als Grundlage hatten. Die Workshops fanden in vielen Kulturinstitutionen in Polen statt, aber auch an der Tate Modern in London, dem MACBA in Barcelona, auf dem Festivaletteratura in Mantova, an Schulen in Paris und als ganze Reihe in Berlin, organisiert von kulturkind e.V.

– Which theme or motif would you love to work on in a children’s book some day?
