Oleksandr Shatokhin – ViVaVostok

Wer ist eigentlich Oleksandr Shatokhin? Und was mag/macht er für Bilderbücher? Drei Fragen an den Illustrator aus der Ukraine.

– How did you start to illustrate and write books for children (and young people)?

I have loved to draw since childhood. I could sit for hours and draw, draw, draw. It hasn’t changed until now: I draw for hours in the same way. I also remember the incredible impression of looking at illustrations in books. I think that this influenced the fact that I am now an illustrator of children’s books. So when I had the opportunity to make the first illustrations for the book, I was incredibly happy!

Seit meiner Kindheit liebe ich es zu zeichnen. Ich konnte stundenlang sitzen und zeichnen, zeichnen, zeichnen. Das hat sich bis heute nicht geändert: Ich zeichne stundenlang auf dieselbe Weise. Ich erinnere mich auch an die unglaubliche Wirkung, die das Betrachten von Illustrationen in Büchern auf mich hatte. Ich glaube, das hat die Tatsache beeinflusst, dass ich jetzt Kinderbuchillustrator bin. Als ich die Gelegenheit hatte, die ersten Illustrationen für ein Buch zu machen, war ich unglaublich glücklich!

– Which of your books should everybody be familiar with (and why)?

I am sure that this is my wordless book „Yellow Butterfly“ published by Vydavnyctvo Staroho Leva (Old Lion Publishing House) and „Red Comet Press“. This is a book that was included in the list of the 100 best picture books in the world and is important to me because it is a story about what is happening now in my Ukraine, about the war. This is a story about hope, about goodness and the victory of light over darkness. Therefore, I would like this story to be seen by as many people as possible, because support is important, understanding who is doing all this evil and horror in Ukraine is just as important.

Ganz klar mein textloses Bilderbuch „Gelber Schmetterling“, das im Verlag „Vydavnyctvo Staroho Leva“ und bei „Red Comet Press erschienen“ ist. Dieses Buch wurde in die Liste der 100 besten Bilderbücher der Welt aufgenommen und ist mir sehr wichtig, weil davon erzählt, was jetzt in meiner Ukraine passiert – über den Krieg. Es ist eine Geschichte über Hoffnung, über das Gute und den Sieg des Lichts über die Dunkelheit. Deshalb möchte ich, dass so viele Menschen wie möglich diese Geschichte sehen, denn Unterstützung ist wichtig, aber genauso wichtig ist es zu verstehen, wer all das Böse und den Horror in der Ukraine verursacht.

– Which theme or motif would you love to work on in a children’s book someday?

I want to make as many wordless books as possible. I love it. Plus, in my books I always try to talk about what I myself am interested in researching and understanding.
